Laviosa Chimica Mineraria SpA is one of the major global suppliers of bentonite products: the processing and distribution of special clays is our core business. We have developed numerous possible applications for these minerals as prime material for industry or mass market end products. Our products, together with applicative consultancy of our technicians and our services, are sold in more than 80 countries in the world to more than 1,500 customers, engaged in several different fields of application. Our special clays are used, other than in the landfill application, in coatings and detergency formulations, in paper production processes, in civil engineering, in casting and others: in all these our products contribute to find solutions of high added value.
DELLITE JFD
DELLITE® JFD Rheological Additive for Polymers
General Information DELLITE® JFD is a nanoclay deriving from a naturally occurring montmorillonite especially purified. DELLITE® JFD is an additive for polymer application used to improve various physical and thermo-mechanical properties. Even if it is compatible with all the range of polymer it is most employed in more polar matrix systems than other grades.
Table 1 Chemical-physical properties
Properties
Composition: smectite
Physical form: off-white fine powder
Particle size (bulk): 8-12 µm (average)
Bulk density: 0.57 g/cm³
Moisture: up to 10%
Applications DELLITE® JFD is a good performing rheological additive based on a purified organoclay. It is able to develop barrier properties in polymer matrixes to gas such as CO2, O2, and H2O i.e. It is employed as flame retardant with anti-dripping and char-forming properties. Due to its chemical nature DELLITE® JFD is known for imparting thermal stability, stiffness melt fracture reduction chemical resistance weight reduction UV barrier properties to the system. Elongation at break of the final polymer matrix is not affected tensile strength could have been improved. Most known systems to get advantage from DELLITE® JFD are polyolefins, polyesters, polystyrene, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polyvinyl alcohol, polyamides, epoxy and acrylic resins, rubbers, and elastomers.
Incorporation In thermoplastic systems incorporation is usually carried out following two paths:
The “masterbatch” technique. Consists in adding DELLITE® JFD in a masterbatch at 50% concentration and diluting such masterbatch in the final compound.
The “direct” technique where DELLITE® JFD is added to the final compound (for example in a twin-screw extruder).
For thermoset systems incorporation should be achieved following below:
DELLITE® JFD may be added to the resin before curing agent addition.
DELLITE® JFD may be incorporated into the curing agent and then all the system should be added to the resin.
Resin and curing agent should be mixed and DELLITE® JFD should be added during reaction.
Dosage Typical levels of addition are in the range of 1-5% by weight on total compound system.
Storage stability and packing Storage is advisable in a dry sheltered place in closed bags. DELLITE® JFD rheological additive is available in 25 kg net paper bags with a shelf life of twelve months from date of manufacture.
