Laviosa Chimica Mineraria SpA is one of the major global suppliers of bentonite products: the processing and distribution of special clays is our core business. We have developed numerous possible applications for these minerals as prime material for industry or mass market end products. Our products, together with applicative consultancy of our technicians and our services, are sold in more than 80 countries in the world to more than 1,500 customers, engaged in several different fields of application. Our special clays are used, other than in the landfill application, in coatings and detergency formulations, in paper production processes, in civil engineering, in casting and others: in all these our products contribute to find solutions of high added value.
ARGIMEL® EDC
LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC Rheological Additive for Solvent Borne Paint and Coatings
Industrial Additives Division Coatings
General Information
LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC is a rheological additive for solvent-borne systems of low to medium polarity. LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC gives thixotropic effect, sag control, and prevents pigments from long-term storage settling. The nature of LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC is a bentonite clay organically modified with a quaternary alkylammonium compound in order to develop lipophilic behavior to be effective in organic solvents. Unlike most of the other conventional organoclays, LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC is self-activating and easily dispersible hence simple and convenient to use.
Table 1 Chemical-physical properties
Properties
Composition: Organically modified smectite
Colour: Pale cream
Physical form: Free flowing powder
Bulk density: 0.4-0.6%
Moisture: ≤ 3%
Applications
LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC is employed in a wide range of manufacturing processes for architectural paints production, anticorrosive paints, road marking paints, primers, bituminous emulsions, and wood paints. LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC shows good rheological performances in solvents like aliphatic mineral spirits and aromatics. Low polarity binders like alkyds and terpenes petroleum derivatives are also compatible with LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC.
Incorporation
LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC belongs to the unconventional type of self-activating organoclays. It does not require strong mechanical energy to disperse nor a chemical (polar) activator to reach the proper level of delamination of the organo-bentonite platelet stacks. LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC can be added at any point in the paint manufacturing process and can be even used in post-addition to correct the final viscosity of a certain batch.
Dosage
Level of addition strongly depends on the type of system and on the degree of thickening or other properties desired. For architectural and industrial paints, typical levels are between 0.2% and 0.8% of LAVIOSA ARGIMEL® EDC. For primers and printing inks, higher levels are required (0.5-1.0%). For strong anti-sagging properties, up to 3.0% can be used.
Storage Stability and Packing
Product does not deteriorate significantly in a 36-months period. Storage is advisable in a dry sheltered place in closed bags. Packing is 25 Kg net paper bags on wood pallets of 1000 - 1400 Kg each.
